    6 1/2" plane at HD

I was wondering if anyone's had any experience with the inexpensive hand planes that HD has? They have a 6 1/2" one for only $10. I like the idea of getting a small/ cheap one to start, and build up my need/ experience for a bigger/ better/ more $$$ place later....

    What do you all think?

What kind of plane? Like a block plane? To me, personally, there is nothing that turns one off of handtools faster then a tool that is junk. But, I know some , uh, lessor quality tools, can be "tuned"...Guess you can buy it and tune it up and let us know!

I am thinking you are talking about a Buck Brothers block plane. It will probably work if you get it sharp. It may fustrate you over time. The cheap planes are usually harder to set and adjust.Grizzly did have a low angle ShopFox that may be what you want for just a little more. E-Bay is also an option.

not too bad. actually better than the cheapie full metal bladed stanleys and it was 10.00 uses a small disposable blade. I just wanted to clean up lap joints done in pine and cedar. Feels good in your hand too...

Probably the Buck Brothers, aka J-U-N-K.

I find Lowes a bit better on hand tools than HD and the Stanley Contractors Grade block planes are not too bad for the price, around $35.

          Be prepared to tune.

I think the first thing is to understand the difference between block plane and bench planes. 6-1/2" has got to be a block plane. There is no progression from block plane to bigger ones - block plane is a different animal.
As for the names - I don't think it matters unless you go for high price tag like veritas. I have a #5 from HD (Buck) and a #4 from Lowes (Stanley). Both were about $40 and they are on the par with each other. Both do the job.

I picked up three BENCH plains (#4, #5, #7) for $10 each at a garage sale, still watching for a BLOCK plain. That is another option.
