What is the correct distance from the blade for a miter slot?

I'm getting read to add a homemade miter slot to my BT3100 and I was curious if ther was a standard for the distance the slot should be from the blade. And if so should the left and the right side be spaced the same?

I already have a extension table built on the right side and I was going to add another to the left before I install miter tracks.

If there is no standard distance I'd like some suggestions as to what might be best.

If your in an HD or other tools store, check the distance on a saw that you like the feel of.
I don't think there are any set rules, but generally the slot would be close enough to keep the blade about 1-2" from the largest miter gage you will be using.

For an idea, my contractor type saw is 5 1'2" on the left side and 4 1/2 on the right , Anywhere in that range should be about right. I have a 16" extension on my miter guage that I can move right up to the blade if I need. Why the difference between left and right I don't know. I hardly ever use it on the right. HTH

      Edit
Looks like on the edge of the center table would be about right.
