Is it rough or surfaced? Kiln Dried, Air Dried or green?

That is a very dependent question.

1)Where do you live? What are the prices of wood in your area like?

I can buy Walnut for $3/bf here, but on the west cost You'll pay $5+/bf since they have to have it shipped.

        2)What is the wood like?

Is there any figure to any of it?

If you want to give him a lowball offer, try this site http://www.innernet.net/galleryofwood/

this is one of the mills I work with and has very low prices for quality stock. I bought some 8/4 Spalted Maple from him and sold it on ebay for 3 times what I paid for it.

Russianwolf, I have saw that site before and those are some SICK prices. Even adding Kiln drying and surfacing, it is lower than most places rough wood. Agreed, this would be an ultra low offer and you may find that the seller is not willing to part with the lumber at these prices. The place you reference is about 2 hours from my house (not that far, just no clear shot to get there) and other local dealers and sawmills are no where close on price or selection. Definate road trip in my future.

Last week I paid $6.25 BF for Honduran Mahogany in a 4/4 thickness, rough lumber. It was perfectly clear with no defects. Defects tend to bring mahogany prices down substantially, since it is usually a pretty clear wood.

Like Russianwolf, I have paid $3BF for 4/4 rough walnut locally. Clear and defect free. Walnut tends to be cheaper in this area of the country (PA).

As mentioned pricing is very dependent upon where you are located (for domestic woods).

I don't know about Teak or clear Pine but you could look at some references online.

If you make it over there anytime soon, tell Ed that I haven't forgotten about them. Just Haven't gotten into the shop enough to need more wood yet. But soon......hehehehehhehe, I'll be back.

I will warn you. His place looks horrible. Maybe about 10 open sided buildings with wood stacked to the rafters. (let him know what your looking for so he can get it ready before you show up) Huge logs laying everywhere. No ryhme or reason to anything. It's a mess. But Ed knows wood.

My last trip I loaded by truck full of 20 year air dried Elm. About 400 bf for $400. Looked horrible, but it's amazing stuff once you plane it. I even had to pull bullets out of a couple pieces. I don't even bother going up if I don't plan on bringing back a truck load, but it's worth it. I may have to do another Spalted Maple run here soon.

Hopefully before it hit your planer!

Did you surface and joint prior to selling for 3x original price?

They were soft metal 22 rounds. but when I spotted the first one I stopped and pulled out about 20 rounds once I knew what to look for on the boards.

I did S2S the Maple before I sold it. I usually try to pick up something from him that I think will sell well. I plane it so people can see what they are buying. I paid $2.20/bf for 100bf of that 8/4 Spalted Maple. I think I sold about half of what I bought and paid for the entire trip.

The benchtop here is one of the pieces I got on that trip, but it has very little spalting compared to the others. http://www.bt3central.com/showthread.php?t=16119
