    Router bits for DT jigs

With the template guides installed on my Bosch 1617 I am finding that the standard length 1/4" shaft DT bits are a little too short. I only reference the 1/4" ones because they are the only DT bits I have that are smaller than 1/2".

What do you use for DT bit sizes? And what brands typically do you use with your jigs?

Obviously the owners of Leigh will have the special bits, as I believe they are longer, correct?

Or maybe I'm doing something wrong?

The Leigh bits are longer and that would have been my recommendation. I think some of the sets will come with 8mm shank and a reducer too so you can maximize the shank diameter. I assume 8mm shanks will work with your jig.

As far as who makes them; Whiteside, CMT, MLCS, Leigh of course and probably a few more.

      Brian,

You don't mention the type of jig you have. I use a HF and a CMT bit which is 1/2 inch at the big end and a 14 degree angle. It's plenty long. I have also broken these bits when using cheaper brands. I consider MLCS good enough for most purposes but not little dovetail bits. I might try their premium brand.

I have the PC 4212 jig.
My assumptions are as follows: Please correct as required.
        - the 17/32" X 7 deg PC bit means that the "pins" on the half blind template are probably also 17/32" wide (I should measure them) and using a smaller bit will mean the joints won't fit.
        - the PC DT bit also means that the through DT template also has 7 degree angle and trying to use a bit with any other angle would mean the joints won't fit.
Am I visualizing this all wrong?
I've only done 1 test joint (HB) and it woked fine, but I'm concerned that I have bought a jig with next to no flexibility as far as sizes of pins/tails goes.
