    Urgent bandsaw help needed

When I put the riser kit on my HF bandsaw I replaced the tensioning rod with some allthread in order to extend the knob above the top wheel housing. That was a bad idea. The thread stripped tonight when tensioning the band.

I'm working on a wedding gift for my niece, so the project needs to be done before June 11, the Happy Day. Since this is an HF tool, ordering a repair part from them is out of the question due to the time constraint.

Any idea which merchant with fast customer service might have a proper replacement rod? Any other ideas?

I think you are going to have a tough time finding a rod from someone else that fits. I'd look at getting a tap slightly larger and cutting new threads and installing another piece of rod or a long bolt that could be made into a handle by a welder or with a sleeve (small pipe) or something along those lines.

The quickest way to go would be to take the stripped nut to the hardware store and get a new SAE threaded nut. The HF tensioning rod and nut were metric. Close but no cigar if you didn't buy metric all thread.
Second..... go to Grizzly's web site for their 14" BS. Go to the PDF file for the saw and get the part numbers for their nut, rod etc. Order it over the phone and you can have it within 3-4 days for a permenant fix. Pat

Yep, unless you bought metric all-thread or also changed the nut, it had to strip. I replaced mine with all-thread and replaced the nut. I made the rod long enough to go beyond the top and heated the rod and bent it 90 degrees for a handle. Then added a piece of turned wood to cover the handle part.
        Good luck

Ken, were you able to find a square nut locally? IIRC that was my problem originally.

I'm not Ken but large square nuts can be found. As big an area as you live in there has to be a "real" hardware store (ie, not the new box Ace) look for an old line hardware store that's been around for awhile.
And the Griz parts do work.

You'd think so, but not in my town, Pat. I do know some places nearby, though, so I think I'll give allthread and a new nut a try. When I have a bit more time I'll see if I can take crack at that tensioner upgrade. My wrist is getting sore just thinking about cranking the handle on this saw!

Thanks for the tips guys. Sorry for the panic in my "voice" but this project is fairly bandsaw intensive, with resawing, tenons, and long curved legs.

                JR,
Popeye is right. I just installed the Grizzly kit myself and very happy with it. It's inexpensive and easy to install. If they have all the parts in stock, you can have them in a couple of days.
Am I missing something? Don't you have the original rod with the square nut?

I can't find the rod and the nut's not looking too good

I'd like to do the upgrade kit, but this project has seemed to have a new sub-project at every step. I need to cut some wood, man!

I found a nice beefy square nut and matching allthread. I think it'll do the trick. I think I'll borrow Ken's idea for the 90-degree bend and handle.

                      Thanks for the help guys.

Thanks for the kind offer, Bruce, and all the others who came to my aid. I've got it going again and it seems to be more stout than ever.

Ken's bent allthread with dowel handle idea works great!
