kreg or what or something else???

I just received a 20% discount voucher from Rockler. I am considering a Kreg pocket hole jig. The question is which one? with 20% off the K3 master becomes not too expensive but I have heard that just getting the simpler version should suffice for most needs. I know there has been much talk about pocket jigs but would value any new advise.

I guess there is also the question of if not the pocket jig what would I use the 20% for??? Power tools are not included - shame

I purchased the K3 master a few weeks ago. No particular reason except that it includes all the bells and whistles I'd buy later. I believe you can purchase just what you what and add on later as you need (read, want) the other peices. I don't find that the vacuum attachment is a necessity, but I got it so I use it. I also use the mounted jig more than the pocket jig. This information is probably worth only what you paid for it.

Thanks Warren, I am going to check them out in the store this weekend.

        Jon,

I don't think that you can really go wrong with any of the Kreg jigs. I made the mistake of buying a cheapie at first (the Pock'it from Simple products, was stocked by Rockler (catalog), don't know that it still is). I wish I had spent the extra $ for the Kreg... The bit broke after only a few holes, so I went out and bought the Kreg mini. Kreg jigs are much more flexable in what sizes of wood they joint, and where the hole is positioned. I can't compare their various models right now, I'm trying not to buy, but the new super kit looks like a decent deal, master kit has a good selection, and the basic has more than you need to get going. You can upgrade the basic to the master system (without sales, price is about the same as buying the master), all of the stuff in the super kit is sold seperately (they say $40 savings)

Whatever Kreg you decide on, you should be happy.

        Jim

The last pocket hole review I saw rated 4 of the Kreg jigs as "Best Tool" within their price range. I've got the Kreg Rocket (~ $50), but think I could get by with the basic $20 unit too.

Put me down as a vote for the K3 Master. I have all the Kreg jigs, and I use them all but I wouldn't have needed the cheaper jigs if I had gotten the K3 first. It has all the bells and whistles and I've found them all to be very useful. I got mine from Woodcraft when they had a 25% off sale. Some of the best "tool" money I've ever spent.

OK looks like it will be down to Rockler this weekend for a K3 Master. I was considering the Rocket Kit but I notice that on the Kreg sit it has a MSRP of $55 while it seems that Rockler has a price of $69

Anybody got any idea if it includes something more or have the just overpriced?

I would not want to talk you out of the Kreg, I'm sure it is good, but I really like my master jig from Penn State Industries. I has variable spacing, is all aluminum and steel, and is about $80 for everything. I haven't used it a lot but I have used it and it worked great. I bought a cheap one that worked but not well. The Penn State works well. Mine came in a nice little wooden box (never liked those blow moulded plastic cases real well).

I have the Kreg basic $20 and use the **** out of it. Being cheap I picked up a couple of the HF swivel lock clamps http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...emnumber=39535 on sale for $3.99 a pair. Work great and much cheaper than the Kreg pliers.
