Need mobile base recommendations for jointer

    Hi,

I was one of the lucky ones that picked up one of the Craftsmand 6" jointers recently for a steal. Now, I need to add a mobile base to it so I can actually move the thing. What has worked best for everyone?....bought or made?

One thing that I am wrestling with is that my tools are stored in my basement (small space) and I will probably do most of the work in the connected garage. To get there all tools will need to go down two concrete steps into the garage. A ramp is a given, but would a large size base help stability of the jointer?...Or given the jointer's weight should I just find a way to use it in my small space in the basement?

    Thanks for the input.

Just my two cents.... I've got the same jointer in Ridgid Orange and Gray. I built a mobile base from Wood magazine plans. Mine doesn't roll very far. and i'm glad of it. My base is very solid and stable but the jointer is very very top heavy. I wouldn't want to try rolling it up or down much of, if any ramps. I'd personally make a mobile base and find a way to store it in the garage if that's where it's gonna get it's primary use. It only has to turn over once to either hurt you or at best break something on the jointer. Pat

        wood magazine base

I've seen the plans for the Wood magazine base. It seems like a possibility. One thing I was thinking is to make the base larger and add some weight to the bottom to try and even out the weight distribution between top and bottom. The jointer is very top heavy and the last thing I want to do is tip it over on me or anything else. My garage is very small and I'm not sure there is space. Even more, I worry about the dampness and the jointer surfaces rusting. Any thoughts.

Wax the tables weekly if you want to prevent rust, but don't add a mobile base. It's not worth the risk.

I have mine on a Wood magazine style base but have swivel casters on lifts at both ends. My ramp is only about 3" high so it doesn't pose a problem.

If you are going to put a heavy, top heavy tool on a mobile base, don't scrimp on the casters. This is a place where quality is worth the extra bucks.

I just recently purchased the same jointer and had one of those HTC mobile bases I picked up from amazon about a year ago. I adjusted the mobile base and used only the short support pieces and it fits and works great.

                final thoughts

                Hi,

Thanks everyone for the recommendations. I am gun shy about taking the jointer down a two step ramp, so I think I'm going to try and come up with a way to use it in the basement for now. The wax idea is good to know if I decide to store it in the garage.

As for the mobile base. I'm going to keep my eyes open for a good deal. Craftsman club just had a special on theirs for $59 down from $79. Seems like it puts it in the same price range as others that have been mentioned.

Well, thanks again for all the advice. The people in this forum are great!

Another vote for an HTC2000. If you extend it towards the back, it counteracts the tendency for it to tip backwards from the weight of the fence, when the fence is pushed all the way back. No problems with tipping for me.

I've got a Homier $17 base under my Griz 6". I liked it so much, I went back a year later and bought another. Great deal!
