    Parts for Stanley planes

I have a couple of old Stanley planes that I am planning to rehab this summer. One of them (a #4 that my wife picked up at a garage sale for me) needs a new lever cap, frog, etc. - I basically only have the bottom. She overpaid for what she got and she didn't know that any parts were missing, but she had good intentions. Anyway, where is a good place to find replacement parts for a reasonable price? - or would it be cheaper for me to buy another #4 on ebay and rehab it?

    Thanks.

If all you have is the base of the plane you may be better off finding another junker and making one good one out of two not so good ones.

Highland Hardware has parts listed. In my opinion their prices are a bit high for parts, as in you probably want to be working on something pretty good to get parts from them.

Try Walt at Brass City Toolworks. Nice man, nice to deal with. He'll likely be able to set you up with something you can use.

Another problem with adding used parts to the body you have is matching the right parts by type, especially the frog. The machining of the mating surface went though several changes over the years.

Totes are fairly interchangable and the knobs are basically low on the older and tall on the later planes.
