I do not use the o-rings either but I have heard of one situation where they might be very handy. Somewhere I heard of somebody using them with the two piece cope and stick bits so they did not have to readjust the bit height when swapping bits. I do not know if this works, just passing on a comment. I use the stacked kind of cope and stick bits so I do not have a chance to try this.
