Excellent! Thanks, Larry. My neighbor is a carpenter and I showed it to him last night. He didn't recognize it, but did feel that it must be for a wooden plane, as your links show. He suggested that the curved hook had to do with removing the iron from the plane. I also appreciated all the creativity that appeared in many of the other responses to my post.
