Newbie question on Dewalt 618B3 and bit installation

I've used routers before but never installed bits myself. Just tried
to do it on my new DeWalt 618B D-handle base. I couldnt completely
tighten the collet. So, the collet is not in flush with the base.
I use 1/4" shank bits. What I was doing incorrectly?

Well, the height of the motor is adjustable within the handle. So when you tighten the bit, it is handy to have the motor extended so the collet is low and accessible. Then, once the bit is tight, you adjust the motor within the handle. Am I missing something?

Whatever you do, don't over-tighten the collet. You run the risk of breaking or cross-threading something.

    Thanks!

I forgot the rule "don't over tighten". However, I'm not sure what you mean by height adjusting within the handle?. You mean depeth adjustment using the ring?

I tried again and adjust the height within the handle. Well, it worked however the quick release latches didnt lock (the "click" sound I hear when I completely insert the motor inside the handle).

So, not sure what I did was correct or incorrect. Any comments from DW618 users?

BTW: The D-handle is just awesome!

What I did was incorrect. The motor should be inserted into the handle completely ( I should hear "click" sound from quick release latches).

I found a detailed review of DeWalt 618B ( http://www.thewoodshop.20m.com/dewalt618.htm ) and according to the article it sounds like I should be using the depth adjustment ring which should have been obvious to me.

Proper way to install a router bit:

            Be sure router is unplugged!!!!!!

            1. The collet retaining nut should be threaded down as far as it will go without beginning to actually compress the collet. NEVER tighten the nut on an empty collet - you will damage the collet.

            2. Insert the bit all the way into the collet, as far as it will go.

            3. Pull the bit back out about 1/16".

            4. Tighten the nut so it is snug, but do not force it.

            Particular to 618:
The motor must be inserted into base until the retaining clips 'click'. In order to adjust the bit height, make sure that motor lock (the black 'buckle') is open and then use the ring. Trying to adjust with lock closed may damage the adjustment ring. Once the bit is at desired height, close the lock.
