woodsmith scraper sharpening system

You know the ones at woodcraft. I've been eyeing them for a few weeks and now they are on sale so I was thinking of pulling the trigger. Does anyone here have one and can comment on how well they work?

I have several scrapers that need to be freshened up. Would I be better off with a honinig guide and a stone? Comments would be most appreciated.

I have one, but to be honest haven't had the need to use it yet.

I don't have one, so I can't comment specifically on the Woodcraft version.

I made a very simple guide to hold my file. It's just an offcut of white oak with a 1/8" kerf cut to hold the file.





A few swipes on each side of the scraper, and the old milled edge is clean. Then I use the shank of a broken router bit to "draw" the edges out.

I cheat for the burr. I use the Veritas Variable Burnisher. I tried rolling a burr myself, but I completely stink at that. I had a heck of a time getting a consistent burr. The Veritas Variable Burnisher showed up in my Christmas stocking.

I'm glad I have it, because now I can get a consistent burr quickly. It makes tuning a scraper so much easier, and that makes using a scraper fun.

I almost got one, but opted to just get some scrapers. Honestly, I didn't find creating the burr that hard. That burnisher does look handy though.

I have a similar one, I believe from Lee Valley. For me it's great.
