    What is this for?

Probably a dumb question but I just noticed this on my 24 inch level. There is a black button that fits into a hole. Not sure if it's the button or the hole I'm suppose to use. Can't figure out what it's purpose is.

i have the same level (I think).

On mine, that was the little fastener that kept the stiff plastic price/info tag thing attached to the level while it was hanging on the rack at the store.

Does button tip protrude past level surface? If yes, it is probably some kind of 'pivot'. You know, drill one hole in the wall, set the level so that button end goes into it, and mark the other hole.

It doesn't protude past the level surface. Maybe bebop is right but would they include a hole in the casting during manufacturing just so they could attach a price tag?

Yup. But probably not a flimsy price tag, but something like a plastic laminated flap with the barcode, etc. No different than the "peel back here for instuctions" on pill bottles.

yeah mine had like a vinyle die-cut tag type of thing that fit into the long opening to the right of the little hole with the pin.

I am a rubber mold designer by day & it would not be a big deal to mold that hole in Ryan. In fact it would be a slight material saving. Slight as it may be, I deal w/ some rubber compounds that cost in excess of 2 grand a pound. Needless to say we make darn sure we've got a good process before we go to scrapping parts. I'd be more inclined to think though that it does serve some purpose other than to give the tag somewhere to hang. Not sure really. It's probably something really simple like how to make farts not stink or something like that.

Seems to me that would be a whole lot of trouble to go to for a price tag. Certainly there's got to be a better, more cost effective way. Must be for something else.

If it an Empire Polycast Level, the hole services absolutely no purpose. The plug is used to hold a tag that specify the length of the level and model number. The tag on your level probably fell off, leaving the plug.

The vials in those $10 levels are usually rather inaccurate - but hanging it on a nail via that hole would make the level act kinda like a plumb bob, and so far, gravity has been pretty accurate.

Ladies & gentlemen I think we have a winner. By design or not, my money is w/ you Scorrpio. The best things sometimes are accidents. I suppose farts shall continue to stink.

I am a level designer for Empire. That hole is for drainage. If you leave the level out in the rain by accident, you simply pull the plug so that the water can drain. We have a special team that designed this and spent 15 years in development for the perfect hole to prevent water buildup on the level. I comes with the optional plug that can be used when used in dry conditions. We are now in development for a gutter system for a hammer. This way if you leave your hammer out in the rain with the level the water has a way to drain off of the hammer surface. We are in talks with Vaughn and Stanley to accommodate their hammers.

All you guys are sick! Everyone knows that's the hole that slips over the 2" finishing nail on the wall in the back of the shop - you know, the one beside the workbench.
