Router Kits which one?

If you look for it, you can find Dewalt 618B3E. I found it at local Home Depot at $280 and got it for $224 with the 20% off coupon.

This kit, in addition to everything else, includes an edge guide ($31 by itself on Amazon), which can be very handy for freehand routing. A great thing about this guide is that it has a dust clollection hood. So, even if you don't use it to guide the router, it is still a good idea to keep it on when freehanding with either fixed of D-handle base - greatly cuts the amount of dust generated. And the case has storage slot for the guide. I totally love this router - very nice, very smooth, plenty of power. I haven't run really large bits in it yet - like those 3" panel raisers - but I am sure it'll handle them fine.

True, it has a spindle lock button, and kit includes only one wrench, but those who prefer 2-wrench system can do it - they'll just need an extra wrench. I personally like the spindle lock.

I picked up the Ridgid Router Combo yesterday. I haven't used it yet, but I'm pleased with its construction and feel so far. I've got in the trunk to take with me to Rockler at lunch so I can pick out a bushing kit and plate.

Mike, I am told that we Canadians can't buy/they won't ship routers (any elactrical tool) to us because of standards - UL in the States CES? here in Canada. This may be propaganda from retailers here, not sure.

Having said that I have DeWalt 616 fixed and plunge base. Wanted a variable speed unit for my Jessem lift which will handle the 690/890, 1617/18 and the 616/618 (doesn't use the fixed base). Bought the 618 with D handle. Put the 618 in the table and have the 616 plus all three bases for handheld. Two motors are perhaps overkill, but I can leave 618 and cord in table and not have to undo pwer cord when I need to freehand, two sets of collets etc.

I have absolutely no complaints with either unit, but if you are going DeWalt go with the 618. (I have not used the Bosch or PC, and would agree that each will have their own favourites)

Are the prices you mention in US or Cdn.$? The 618 with D Handle cost me $259 Cdn. so if you can get 618 fixed, D and plunge bases for $259Cdn., I'd jump at it!

I am also looking for a second router...I have a ryobi 161 mounted in my router table but now have a need for a handheld...

why don't you try RONA? they have a black and decker plunge router for $89 and canadian tire have the same model for $114 but they will match price.

you could also try the ryobi plunge router, listed at $159 at home depot.

have not yet made up my mind as to which one i am going to buy but i am leaning towards the black and decker, heck at that price i just might buy two!!!

Router Kits

I have both the Bosch and the DeWalt. You won't go wrong with either. I agree that it comes down to a feel. Check them both out. I actually use all 3 bases for the DeWalt. The D-handle is particularly useful in my dovetail jig. It gives me a bit more control. So if you think you might use the D-handle, I'd go with the DeWalt kit. Both have smooth plunge bases. I'd say a slight edge to Bosch. It may come down to whether you like the Bosch blue or the DeWalt yellow.

I have been researching router kit to buy and after reading this thread
and I couldnt wait any longer. Went to lowes with HD 20% coupon and bought it for $180. On the way back home, I stopped by at Rockler to buy a drill bit. There I saw the same package priced at $209. I asked the sales person whether it was a sale price. He said no, it was a normal price. I was all smiling... Price matching was in my mind.

Going to lowes tomorrow to get it PMed. Hopefully, I'd get 30% off of $209. Lets see....

oops! The "it" was Bosch 1617EVSPK. I would have bought Dewalt 618B3 but Lowes doesnt carry it.

No luck. Lowes said either they will price match and give 10% or take 20% from their listed price.

I second the vote for Hitachi although this is the only kit I have so I have no basis for comparison. As for the Hitachi styling - I happen to like the style of my Hitachi KM12SC and I don't think it qualifies for uggliest.

I suspect Jim and Larry refer to the new style of Hitachi tools that this router does not have - the style with multi-colored waves. I have read an article in the magazine that said that Hitachi put a lot of research into this style. They were going for a "distinctive look" and easy visual brand recognition. I must say their new tools are standing out visually. If they backup their plans with quality of tools - the distinctive look may actually play in their favor. The router I have do not have the new look but has the quality.
