    Drum Sander Plans?

Does anyone have a source for shop-built drum sander plans?

I have an old plan using 5" plywood discs to make a drum, but I was wondering if anyone had current plans for a sander.

    Thanks, loads.

The latest issue of "ShopNotes" has one shown on the cover.

    Vol. 15 Issue 86

They have it set up to run off the Arbor of a Table Saw, but it could easily be adapted to run off it's own motor.

All you'd have to do is design a sturdy base for it and hang the motor in the base under the Sander. Sanding Drum is 16" wide.

            Thanks, and a quuestion...

            ..to everyone who responded.

Does anyone know how well the slide-the-work-over-the-drum sanders work?

I'm interested mainly in getting bandsaw marks off of thin resawn lumber -- down to 1/16" final dimension.

I would guess that the slide-the-work-over-the-drum types would not give consistant thickness output for bent laminations.

I've been doing some research myself and talking to a few people who've built drum sanders. The problem with the 'slike the work over the drum sander style is keeping consistent presure on the material and is a problem for very thin stock.
Another key is the placement of the drive pulley on the drum in relation to the bearings. You want to have "pulley-bearing-drum-bearing". Also, don't skimp on the diameter of the axle. Also, it is rumoured that it's best to have a very rigid set-up for the drum and make the table adjustable at all 4 corners when one is sanding very thin stock. Thin stock would also require sled for control and consistency.

The ShopNotes Issue #86 -- with the drum sander article in it -- JUST hit the bookstores today! Great issue.

The tool looks good too. This is the ONLY plan I have seen that also includes a belt for feeding the stock.

Thank you so much for the heads up. I may even subscribe to ShopNotes!

                    Thom,

I have the old Wood magazine issue, one of the first 10. That has plans for a "push thru" drum sander. They also had a source for an aluminum drum, if you didn't want to use the plywood circles. With the plywood, I particularly like their method of insuring that the drum was parallel to the table.

Let me know if you want a copy.

Nw that looks like a fine machine. There are some nice looking ones in the thread.
I had started building one at one point to mount on a cheapo wood lathe.
The drum is 4" S&D PVC filled with a bunch of 3/4" plywood doughnuts. I trued the completed drum on the lathe. Thats about as far as I got on it. My CNC router took front seat from there on in.
The drum, however seems like it will work well on the cheap.
