Is the Ryobi AP1300 planer worth it ?

THe reason I ask. In the latest issue of Wood, in the "new Tools for '06" they had a new Ryobi planer, at a lower price point.

Not sure if this will replace the AP1300, but if they do, and the price starts to drop to clear them out, should I jump at this, or hold out for the rigid planer?

I've seen you can do better with the Rigid planer, but if I can get the AP1300 for $200 or $150, will the cost difference offset the quality difference?

That is not the AP1300 as I understand. It is a new model with a lower price point. I would think it would offer less features than the AP1300. Less than $200 vs $249.

If looking for a planer around $200, check out Grizzly's G0505 ($210 on amazon)

It is a new model. Also the article stated that there is no infeed/outfeed table.

I tried both and decided the Ridgid was worth the extra $100. I would expect another 20% off sale before Christmas, if that matters...

After shipping the Griz is $252.20 to your door. Might as well buy the AP1300 locally for that price. If you prefer to stay closer to $200, you might consider the Delta TP300 or TP305...HD's website has them for $180 w/free shipping until Jan 06. You could also look into a recondition Ridgid through Cummins.

I don't know if the AP1301 is a bettr planer or not. Given the design of the new one, I'll bet it does not perform as well. I have had an AP1300 for a couple of years now and it has worked perfectly. It has plenty of power and very little or no snipe. I think the feed rate is a bit high in relation to the cutter speed. I think my wife paid $250 for it as a birthday gift. If you can get one on sale, it's a pretty good value.
