    Moderation: What another forum does

Just for the sake of discussion:
    http://forum.cyclingnews.com/showthread.php?t=15339

    http://forum.cyclingnews.com/showthread.php?t=11179

And then the "About the forum" subforum directory.

This all in a forum much larger than ours with a much broader membership internationally. I'm not suggesting that we follow their lead.

    Mark,

Is this a solution in search of a problem?

One of the things I love about this forum, is the lack of sniping. Now, I don't know what moderators have to deal with. Seems to me that there are a lot of kind folks on this forrum.

No Steve I'm just giving an example of what other forums are doing. Currently we do not seem to have any issues other than spammers, which is just a way of life these days. By and large BT3Central has been a friendly place with moderator intervention occuring very few times.

I intend for BT3Central to remain as it is, however I would like to see some growth and increased traffic and discussion.

One way to increase traffic and discussion would be to concentrate on ways to turn this place back into the fine woodworking forum it once was and away from the Starbucks that it is now. A glance at the number of posts in the forums will quickly point out that woodworking takes a back seat here.

8 of the 9 most recent threads are directly woodworking related, the other is this one. Strange that.

Not all of them, Bruce. .......I'm still here.

Actually most of the guys that are no longer around have had differences of opinions with some of the other Members or the Mods in particular. That happens on all forums from time to time. Nature of the beast. Some felt we are not even handed when dealing with boarderline issues. Of course we are not. Every person alive has opinions. For one person to try and regulate another's opinion is a near impossible task. Ergo the need for a few simple rules.

Sadly, not every Member can see what discussions have taken place for any given incident. This is intentional. The Mods are doing what they have been asked to do. Others then jump on us for doing that because they disagree with how we handled it. That is okay. Many forums on the net do not have much moderation. Those places have a seriously different atmosphere. Not such a bad thing unless the owner requested something different when you signed up.

BT3Central isn't as bad as some on moderation, but we will perform the duties asked of us when the time comes, even if it seems harsh to some. We often do this with a heavy heart. It is not an easy thing to do. Alas....here we are.

                      Well said Lee!

I would like to see woodworking projects being posted here. And I wish I could get my shop in order so that I could start some.

Lee, I totally agree with everything you said with the exception of you including yourself in the "out crowd".
You are by far one of the most level headed people I ever known, and your Shark's ain't too shabby either.

Oh, BTW, does sucking up get me a bigger discount on your stuff.

I dunno. I like the fact that there's a place for good-natured BS as well as hard-core WW topics.

IMNSHO, the moderation here is pretty balanced; not too heavy-handed but willing to do what needs to be done. Having done some hiring-and-firing myself, I understand how hard it is to ban somebody.

I don't like the unmoderated forums: I get enough craziness and rowdiness and name-calling teaching every day. I don't need the chaos on my own time.

On a totally unrelated note: I don't check in for a few days and there's almost 2000 new posts! It's gonna take me a week to catch up!

                          g.
