Sorry if this has already been discussed but I did a Search and came up empty.

What do I need to do to turn on the smilees that would be used in the message text? The message heading smilees are there but the others aren't. TIA.

I think this is it:
Go to userCP
Edit Options
At the bottom choose to use WYSIWYG editing and the smilies will appear on the border of your message box
