    Interesting idea, but two things they didn't mention is that the holes for the pipe must be *exactly* the right size for a snug fit front-to-back, otherwise the weight will tear them out (and they will vibrate loose). The other thing is that *black* iron pipe will react with the wood, so you're better off with galvanized pipe.
    (not to mention that all the boards I've gotten recently from the sawmill are over 8' long, usually 10').

      3/4" conduit (with a few wraps of aluminum tape) in a 15/16" hole drilled at 5° works for me. I used foam pipe insulation as a cushion. I have not noticed any tear-out or bending of the conduit.
