It has been some time since I have posted here. I have been working on my shop for the past 3+ years and it had evolved to a point that I felt I pretty well had things set(for awhile anyway). Here is what the shop looked like up until March:

Rough year for my shop! III
Luckly I had insurance and have been working to bring the shop back because I plan to retire next January. Although I still have my
BT3100, I'm afraid I have slipped over to the dark side with a new Grizzly hybird saw(love it). I am also enjoying my new Delta 16 1/2" drill press, it has a lazer guide which I thought was just a gimmick. But wow, once I finally got it aligned I don't see how I ever did without it. I still haven't got the dust collection put back together(will start on it tomorrow), but here is my "new" shop now:Last edited by Larryl; 11-30-2008, 09:23 PM.I thought I was wrong, but I was mistaken.Comment

Oh man that sucks Larry. My condolences to you. Looks like most of the damage might of been in the upstairs living area? I hope all works out OK. Seems like most of the tools are salvageble anyway.

Sorry to hear of your problems. But it looks like you're about ready to make sawdust.

What did happen? It does look like mostly smoke damage in there, with the normal heat melting plastic damage. Looks to clean to have started in the shop. She couldn't tell the difference between the escape pod, and the bathroom. We had to go back for her.........................Twice.Comment

Thanks all for the comments and concern. The shop is a detached building away from the house and it was mostly smoke and water damage from the fire department(they are volunteer but the first units were on scene within 10 minutes). Apparently I am the cause of the fire. I am a pipe smoker(or I was) and always tamped the doddle out in a metal trash can I used for cut offs and scraps. Well there must have been some paper or cardboard down in there also, about 3-3 1/2 hours after I closed up the shop and was just going to bed a sheriff's deputy was banging on the door and ringing the bell. Luckly he was driving by and noticed the glow and flames comming out of the skylights. I lost so many small things that I could not list them all on the insurance claim(couldn't remember all the little things we all have stuffed away in drawers), however I was able to salvage the band saw, table saw, jointer, planner, dust collector, and two benches. I am very lucky, and I think I am actually going to like the shop the way I now have it setup even better than before. Again thanks for your looking at my new shop, hopefully my future post will be some actual projects completed.I thought I was wrong, but I was mistaken.Comment

Fires are unfortunate, but a motivator to upgrade. I've had a few, and luckily I was present to extinguish. Doing regular safety/procedure checks and having a proper extinguisher makes sense.
Two businessmen were having lunch one day and one said to the other, that he had a fire at his business, no one was hurt, and insurance paid $50,000 to cover damages. The other guy said he had a flood and the insurance paid $75,000. The first guy asked him "How do you arrange a flood?"

glad to hear that you could recover from the damage, and the new shop looks great.
I came close to having a fire from an extension cord. 16 gauge 100 foot running wither the saw or the vacuum, and it melted, so i threw the ancient extinguisher on it to be safe (it was a good 20 years old, so it needed to be replaced anyways). I now use a 10 gauge 50' cord for everything, and my parents were convinced to get a half dozen extinguishers to put around the house.AlexComment
