Delta 50-840 a good starter DC unit?

My shop space is fairly limited (two car garage with one car and some storage on one wall, shop on the narrow side) but I want to get some dust collection in there. Something better than the shop vac, anyway. There's a Delta 50-840 available locally for $140, looks to be in great condition. I'm thinking that I can't really go wrong with this because the device is certainly better than the shop vac, but I'm curious what others thoughts are.

My biggest concern is that the 50-840 looks to be an older model. The 50-850 looks to have replaced it but that's $400+ new. Will I be able to find 50-840 parts and bags still, or should I look for something newer and live with the shop vac for the moment?

Yes, that sytem should do you just fine! Ideally, you'd want something with 2hp and 1 micron filtering, but you'd be hardpressed to acquire such a rig for under $240.

If Delta's 1.5HP rating is equivalent to HF's 2HP rating, which lchien has proven IMHO, then you'd have plenty of power. Given that and the great price, I wouldn't worry about 2micron filtering. That's way better than the 30 micron bags that come on many DCs of this type.

    Good score. Go for it.

Sounds like a good deal. I paid $330 for my new delta DC a couple of months ago. You should be able to get after market bags if you feel you need to replace
