    Contractor Saw Dust Collection

Found the Biesemeyer fence package on clearance at Lowes so I took the step of selling off my BT & accessories and picking up the Delta contractor's saw. So basically the 36-982 that I've ended up with.

This has the dust chute on the bottom so I have it connected to my dust collector. But the back of the saw cabinet is open -- how does it get any real suction in that kind of setup ? Seems like a good bit of the dust would just float out the back.

Strange looking at that blade in there after being used to the BT3100 for so long -- no shroud at all -- just a spinning blade in the middle of that cabinet.

Has anyone tried to find a way to close up the back ? Obviously there are moving parts involved since the motor hangs out the back but wanted to get some ideas from others.

    Thanks,
    Steve

Tom Hintz, who is a member here wrote an article on dust collection for a Jet contractors saw, should be the same for the Delta.

Here's the link, hope this helps:http://www.newwoodworker.com/jetdust.html

It gets very little downdraft going with that arrangement. The tray catches what falls on it, and some of that will get sucked in the hole. Closing the back or building a blade shroud would help alot.

I used a similar solution, except that mine is cut so that it has less open holes... I figure I don't need to allow the shroud to have room for the saw to tilt. Instead, I decided to attach the shroud with magnetic tape from Menards. That way, if I need to tilt the blade or make an adjustment, I just pull it right off without having to get a wrench or screwdriver.

Steve - Here's a link to a thread on CS DC over at SMC. Chuck Lenz's approach is pretty slick and doesn't require removing a back panel to bevel the blade.

Welcome to the forum Charlie. I've approved your post. Thanks for the link but it is sometimes considered bad form to drag up old threads. This one happens to be from 2007.
