Going against the specific question that you asked about using a miter slot for feather boards, - last week, I used the miter slot gauge and miter on my router table.
I had 3 boards 1/2 in thick, 2 inches wide and 12 inches long. I needed a round bottom slot across the width of each about 1/2 in from each end. Hard to do by hand, and even using a fence. Also hard to use a jig for such a small piece - in order to use the router on top. The Quickest way was to use the miter slot and miter guage. Worked fine.
As to your specific question, I have used feather boards in my miter slot for long pieces - 4 to 8 ft pieces used in making mouldings and picture frames. It is very hard to make smooth pieces for mouldings and picture frames from long stock without a feather board. At least I have not developed that kind of skill yet, - but I don't do this as a day job either.
