    Drill Press Light

I jury rigged a light on my old DP - easy access to the wiring.

My new DP was a different story. I think most of your (US) DP's have a light?

I looked at the wiring associated with the on/off switch and thought - no chance. Then I had an old friend visit me (I see him about twice a year - he's an expat. Aussie living in the US). And he said "what's in there?". I undid the single screw on the cover and lo and behold - it's just a junction box! (At this point I'm slapping my head). Like- why didn't I think of at least looking

    So here's the result:

It's a small spotlight I've had hanging around for years - I just knew I use it eventually

It's mounted on a square of 1/2" MDF (what else?) I didn't want to drill/tap the DP head, so I inserted an "Amazing" magnet (1/2" dia x 3/8" deep), in each corner - holes drilled to within 1/16" of "all the way thru". I added the strike plates because it looked better!

Because the square wanted to slide a little on the DP high-gloss paint, I glued a piece of 180 grit sandpaper on the back of the square - it REALLY grabs (And of course - on/off with the DP switch).

I only had to drill a 1/2" hole in the junction box and add a rubber grommet.

Yeah - I know - the color doesn't quite match - and -what really annoys me, I couldn't buy/steal any black 3 core flex

You painted a piece of MDF instead of letting the grain show through?

    I'm shocked, Rod!

So the light turns on and off with the drill press's motor, or did I misunderstand how you have it wired in?

Yup - that's the nice bit! Wired to the same switch connection as the motor (inside the junction box).

I hope you didn't wire it in series so that if the light bulb burns out you can't use the motor! Personally, I like having the light on a different switch since it helps me line things up.

I'm the same way, especially with the kind of lighting I have in my garage...er shop. But that looks like a very clever solution you have there.

No grain in MDF, huh? What a disappointment

                      Nope - parallel wired.

The wife got me a magnetic base LED light for Christmas which was intended to find a home on the boat for when I'm working on the engines, some of the corners are a little dark. Instead it found itself mounted to the drill press and lays a nice bright spot on the work area.

That is a nice setup though and looks like what I had been considering before this came along.

                          Rod,

What sort of chuck is that? Looks keyless. Does it grip bits adequately?

                          Jim

Yes, Jim - keyless. My previous DP also had one which sort of just "ended" as you tightened it - still worked OK. This one is better in that the last 1/16 of a turn has a definite "clamp" feel - probably just psychological

"Grip adequately?" IMHO - Yes. I've used a 2-1/2" forstner (450RPM), in it and there was no hint of slippage. Of course, I wasn't trying to stop it spinning. Smaller bits are not an issue.

Re MDF grain. MDF ='s Mostly Diagonal and Fine (grain)! OK, so it was a stretch to get there.

On the serious side, I'm amazed how much these little magnetic lights go for so I was intrigued by your design, Rod. Nice work so expect it to be stolen... er, the design that is. Pennsylvania is on the east side of the states.
