    Kirby’s Shed: Introduction

This is the first of a series and includes a (very) rough floor plan - click on it to read it; it's not as cluttered as it looks – I hope to improve my ‘Sketchup’ skills.

The Shed was purpose-built as a Workshop – at the time I had a small 1-car garage that got flooded every time we had even a shower of rain. It was made as large as it could be, based on the room we had, and what our local council would allow.

Size.............: 24’ deep x 18’ wide (usable), 8'-9" High - floor to the underside of thr roof trusses.
Power..........: 2 x 15amp circuits 240v 50Hz (standard Oz power), switchboard in the Shed.
Access.........: Automatic 18’ door with sound absorbing insulation; and a regular rear door.
    Floor.............: Painted concrete
Construction: Exterior Brick, interior 2x4 frames lined with ½” MDF.
Ceiling.........: None – Roof trusses left open for overhead storage. Tile roof.
Lighting.......: 7 x twin 4’ fluorescent tubes, 2 skylights. Some spot lighting over the bench and elsewhere. No windows.
Heating/cooling: Overhead fan and 2 small electric heaters – we have a very mild climate in Melbourne – all year.
Dust collection: One Shopvac “permanently” attached to the table saw, and another that follows me from tool- to-tool. A 1HP DC attached to the Jointer/thicknesser.

Subsequent posts: I will start on the left (DP) and proceed around the walls to the Grinder. Finishing up with the stuff in the center of the Shed. I will take pics of the stuff on the walls as well, as I move around. I will comment on anything notable…
WARNING – you may notice some dust.

I like the warning that we may notice some dust. What else would we expect when you have the door open? O.K. you have our curiosity up. When are the rest of the pics coming??

The item visible on the right is store bought, but the rest is home made - I will take some overhead pics after all the others...

(I hope) all pics etc. will be completed by April 29 - that's when LOML returns from her Japan Quilting trip

It's nice to see all the craftsmanship involved and a great set-up to aspire to!!!!

Something interesting in some articles I recently read is that there is a lot of excitement building for the use of blue gingham in woodshops. Both Sam Malone and Norm from New Yankee workshop talked about how the blue / white check really helps for better shop lighting e.g. straighter cuts and better finished products. They also talked about how they hide baby dust collectors underneath each stationary tool which means Rod's secret is finally out!!! If I can even come close to Rod, Sam, and Norm's woodshop skills using blue gingham like they do I'm leaving right now for the fabric store ....

                  Seriously .... VERY NICE WORK!!!

The gingham - well, obviously the secret is out!

My covers were chosen after months of research (Cheapest stuff LOML could find that would do the job ) I cut them to size and she "overlocks" the cut edges.

                      Did you hear the laughing?

I showed the picture to my spouse proving that using a garage for a car is just so 70s and suggesting that this is how a modern garage should look (even in Alaska).

Do you still hear the laughing?

But, very nice indeed. Regards, Steve

Cheers for starting this Rod...I know I've been bugging you about it.

If you need any sketchup help just let me know. I make a living off of using it day in day out.

I'd ask my wife to help with the blue gingham...but she cant sew....Mum !

Incredible craftsmanship as usual Rod. You are an inspiration to all of us. Keep the pic's coming. I enjoy shop pictures. I would like to "in person" meet all the members and see their workshops.
