Garage Shop Setup

I am in the process of moving my shop from the basement to the garage.

I get one side of the garage;LOML's car gets the other side.

Right now, the TS, BS, router table, & CMS are all on mobile bases and stored on the wall opposite of and a parallel with the car.

I was thinking of placing wall cabinets above the tools and having a workbench, lumber cart and mobile cart on the opposite side along the centerline of the garage.

Do you like that idea or turning the wall into a workbench/wall of cabinets with the tools along the centerline?

I went the other direction (garage to basement) for improved climate control.

However, in both locations I have all of my tools on mobile bases with stationary benches/cabinets around the outside. This approach allows you to move tools around for extra clearance when needed or organize your workflow from one tool to the next.

I guess you could do the same thing with mobile benches/cabinets, but for me at least, those work best sitting around the outside.

I think it's more natural to have the cabinets above the workbench so you have your tools within reach when you're working. Just make sure the cabinets are hung high enough so their depth does not encroach into your working space.

Also having the mobile stuff along the middle of the garage gives you wiggle room by the car when needed.

I strongly second Chris' suggestion. My spouse also insists on parking in my workshop (and I also do in the winter) so everything is on castors.

The point of having the saw in the middle of the floor, rather than against the wall, has proven to be important when handling long work pieces.

Another suggestion: If you use dust collection, take the time to strategically install ducts and blast gates so equipment can be moved when needed.

My only concern would be that, if you need to temporarily expand for a larger project, you are going to have a partition down the middle of the garage to fight with. Unless, of course, everything is on a mobile base and can be moved easily.

Let her put her car in there, then being very careful, orchestrate a kickback that puts a hole through her window. Make certain the garage is heated before doing that because you might be sleeping out there for a few days. But after that, things will get back to normal, and you'll have a nice size workshop.
