    Lumber Rack

I finally finished my lumber rack. It is a pretty simple design done many times before - 2x4s bolted to the wall using 5/16" x 5 1/2" lag screws. The horizontal supports are 2x4s with 3/4" plywood screwed and glued on each side, then bolted to the vertical 2x4s at a slight angle. I still have one more set to put up, but i have to move the upper cabinets first. Once the cabinet is moved, it'll hold 8' by 14.5" lumber. I didn't put supports all the way to the floor as eventually i want to be able to park a sheet goods cart underneath. I put a couple bungee cords between the vertical 2x4s to hold some smaller cutoffs.

Had the Triton racks been on sale for $35 before i started, i would have just used two pairs of them. It would have saved a lot of time and wouldn't have been that much more expensive. Anyways, i'm very happy it is done. Although i don't have a lot of lumber, it uncluttered the shop a lot and is a major step getting it ready to epoxy the floor.

Looks great - I like the idea of the scrap storage. Is that a wire or bungee cord?
    Thanks again,

I'm liking it! I have a similar space in the building I'm soon going to move my shop into, and may, er, borrow certain elements of your design.

One suggestion, however: concrete block will wick moisture, so you might want to isolate the bottom ends of your shorts with some kind of non-absorbent material.

Mini-bungee cords from Target so i can take them off to put longer pieces in there if i need to.

Probably a good idea. Maybe i'll try cut some scrap plywood to fit in there for the cutoffs to sit on. It wouldn't be non-absorbent material, but it should be enough to keep any moisture from affecting the cutoffs.

Nice storage rack. I especially like the shorts storage. I think I will have to use
            that myself.

Great idea! And, just in time for my new shop!!! :~)
I have a simular space to the right of my garage door (8' X 8' door) that will be perfect for this type of rack.

Nice work there, Eric! Looks really neat.

I, too, had just finished installing the white Stanley brackets that HD sells when I heard about the Triton sale. Still spent much less than the sale price but having those black-and-yellow-orange thingies in my shop would have been nice!

Very nice! But I'm a little partial. I built the same thing in my shop. Mine is 12 ft long by 8 to the ceiling. Nice job.

Nice work. I did something similiar in my shop but I justed used the 2x4s and not the ply on the sides.
