    My Garage Shop

Looks so big and roomy in the drawing:

    http://ssmith1627.myphotoalbum.com/v...hop_layout_001

But then of course reality is a bit tighter of a fit....and a lot more cluttered:

    http://ssmith1627.myphotoalbum.com/v...2Smith0006_001

    But I think it'll work.

Have the DC in place now with a replacement bag on the way. Ducting goes to the router table, floor sweep, shark guard, rear of BT3100, jointer and bandsaw. Going to leave a quick disconnect on the bandsaw so that I can use that length of flex hose over at the workbench when needed.

My wife and I are going through some required classes now prior to fostering / adopting so I have to get to work. Going to tackle that adaptable bed from Wood magazine.....goes from crib to toddler bed to adolescent bed. Made from maple and not a lot of finishing involved so I think it'll be good for my first big project. Wish me luck.

I think it's that tub of kitty litter that's messin' you up...

Nice layout. It actually looks like you've got quite a bit of room to roam. I'm constantly fussing with my layout because I use a smaller space. Yours will probably require fewer tweaks for that reason, but also because your layout is good right from the start.

I especially like the the outfeed/assembly table, something I've just recently added. And the "task" station with three tools on it is a really good idea.

    Where will you store wood?

      shop......

Steve, looks as if you have it pretty well set-up and ready to work for sure.

I DID see the HF jointer.....in the picture!

What is that area to the rear of the picture....more storage room for lumber
and sheet goods or just for mowers and other yard type tools?
I don't like rakes, shovels, pitchforks, spades, this type stuff....they are what
I call "blister makers" or back breaker type tools!

If it ain't power tools, electric or gas powered I don't really want them!

JR, I KNEW I shoulda moved that before I took the picture. I knew it. haha I actually have a few of those -- good for keeping cutoffs or misc whatever in them. Sturdy little containers.

This is probably version 4 of my layout. The router table started out where the bandsaw is now. The workbench / saw cabinet island has been rotated at least 3 times, the last one to keep the flex hose drop for the shark guard from interfering with the garage door.

On the far wall, left side, I have a shelf up there and another tiny shelf left of the window with some 2x4's spanning the gap. It's just a place for me to store really long stuff like crown molding and baseboard -- we've been remodeling our house for 2 years now. And the right side of that obviously is what I also use to hang my clamps from.

On the right wall I have an old door on some sawhorses. Mortiser, bench grinder and drill press sit there and underneath I have two dog kennels -- these dogs are picky and don't like to be outside when it dips into the teens ! haha In that space is also a shelving unit I use for storing wood.

I'm lucky in that I have a separate building totally apart from the garage here. It was an apartment for my wife's grandparents but hasn't been used in 15 years. I've done some wiring up there to put outlets and lights back in operation. (new outlets, wire and lights -- not using that old stuff) It has a garage door on the front and a gravel shop area -- that's where my trailer stays, my riding and push mowers, rakes, all that stuff. Certainly comes in handy. And I could store as much wood up there as I could ever get my hands on.

Shop needs more work but I'm getting closer....right now I just need to build something to justify all this !

If I come visit.. how long can I stay? And... can I bring my cat? ha.. ha...

As long as your spouse doesn't insist on bringing the car in, you'll be just fine I do believe. You got less than some and much more than many... count your blessings!

          Regards...

I'm very lucky that the LOML is very understanding over all this and not just that, very supportive of it too. And yes, both of the cars sit outside which is a pain with the frost and with our gravel (/mud) driveway.

This is the house that my wife grew up in.....so I'm very lucky indeed....still owned by the family although her parents moved about 20 minutes away and live on a farm now. It left us with this house and no mortgage payment. Can't beat that.

              Oh, man, you're killing me!

If the stock market performs for the next 8 quarters like it has this quarter, I'll be in the same position. Except for the part where LOML is understanding and supportive. But, hey, you can't have everything.

Alternatively, I was thinking about going to Las Vegas and putting the whole wad on black. You gotta have plan!

No, man, you gotta put the whole thing on red 00. Which explains why I still work for a living....

                Steve, good luck to ya!

I was thinkin the same thing but we have all ours in TSP/401k....
Can't use it early without big penalties which is probably a good thing.

I was debating on putting a little less toward retirement and invest in a regular account instead.

In fine WW they had an awsome shop. But it was about 35K i think...Not sure how easy it would be to get my wife to sign off on something like that when we buy a house. Not to mention i'll need a good size yard for something like that. It will have to be sold as an investment.
It would be nice to park in a garage and work in a shop... with heat and AC.

That space looks great, Steve. Wish I had your square footage!

No mortgage!!? -- you need to start spending, and getting your local economy growing! I'd start building that massive shop -- lots of windows, skylights, big screen TV, and one of those granite 1/2 round sinks with the foot operated water spray (like we had in shop class back in the old days).

Hmm ... maybe even a urinal.

Nice setup. Can't help but notice the old car tags hanging on the wall - I thought I was the only one who had mine hanging up in the garage.

Messmaker, please do ! Would love to see. Never know when you might learn something by how someone else set theirs up.

Wareagle -- yeah, I have three of our old tags there. Have seen where you can use them bent over to make a birdhouse roof. Still trying to decide just how tacky that really would look but it's an idea !
