    Dust separator question

I'm building a 55-gal barrel chip separator to work with the HP 2hp DC. I'm thinking of having just the outlet port(to DC) on the lid, and the inlet oriented on the side of the barrel like the example below.

I figure it would be one less 90 degree bend in piping and therefore better airflow. I'm using 5" metal piping and fittings. I also consider the extra work making the neutral vane and reinforcing the barrel.
Do you think it would make a difference, or should I just stick with both ports in the lid.

Absolutely worth the extra work. Will create much more of a cyclonic separation, which is what you're looking for after all.

I can't swear to the cyclonic action of doing what you propose. If you do it be sure to post pics of it. I went this way....
only the fine dust makes it to the bags and even with the farthest run/drop being about 30' away it misses very little. Pat
Woodworking is therapy.....some of us need more therapy than others. <ZERO>
