    Shims for fences

I find I'm using business cards a lot for micro adjustments on the fences when precision is called for, whether on the router, tablesaw, bandsaw, etc. I don't have one of those fancy Incra fences which would be nice.
The card work fine except the edge get crumbled often especially in the middle of an adjustment.
Do you know where I can get plastic or brass shims in various thickness, 64th, 32nd, 16th, maybe in a set?
Beside the fancy stuff, what do you guys use?

I saw this issue somewhere over the weekend and this was the answer:

Go to your local auto parts store Howie.

If they don't have "shims" pick up some cheap feeler guages (not the wire type). They're inexpensive and work like a champ. They have a range of from .001" on up in each set.

The submitter of this one keeps a couple sets on hand all the time.

Lee Valley also have some options here.

I always liked Mark Duchinske (sp) suggestion. He uses POST-IT notes.
they are 0.004" each, so 4 of them are 1/64". about as close as I will ever get.
Alos plastic coated playing cards work fine. Can't recall the thickness off hand, but I think it is about 0.010"

Actually, I think that playing cards HAVE to be exactly 0.010" thick. Don't know who determined that, who measures them, or anything else about it, but it sounds reassuring in an otherwise uncertain world.

For my table saw I shim the plate with duct tape. Just add one pice at a time till its perfect. no idea how thick it is. I just measure with my finger nail sliding over once its doesn't catch thats enough tape.

Save the plastic 'credit cards' you get in the mail. Work great for glue spreaders, too.
