If one side of this wall is your shop, maybe plywood walls is the way to go, both for this reason and for the utility (hang anything anywhere).

Thanks for all the replies. I didn't expect this many. Unfortunately the wall in question (between family room and shop) is already framed, though drywall is not hung yet. Also unfortunately we are under some time pressure (i.e SWMBO declared it needed to be done by Turkey Day at the latest). So I will hang the drywall and then worry about what to do on the shop side. Also as my dad pointed out I use most of my loud tools outside anyway.
