    Ulitmate Bench Top???

Hey guys... I was browsing the classifieds in the local paper and found a guy with several bowling lanes for sale...
    The are Maple, 23.5' Long, 42" Wide, 2 1/4" thick, $110 each...
I could make several bench tops with over 23ft to play with...
These seem like they would be absolutely fantastic... He has 15 of them, although I'm pretty sure I would only pick up one of them...

Please let me know what you guys/gals think...

    Thanks!

I just called the guy... he said one guy came and bought them all to use as FLOORING!!!! He did take my name and number in case he doesn't need them all, and he did say he would more than likely have one or two slabs left over, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed... MAN, what a deal... wish I had looked before the weekend...

Keep in mind that a typical wooden Bowling lane consist of several types of wood. The front of the lane or “Head” is made from the hardest wood as it must suffer the most punishment. That section if I remember correctly is 12’ to 15’ long. The next section is made from a combination of hard wood and softwood with every other board being hard or soft. The last section is all softwood until it reaches the Pin deck and this section is made from all hardwood also. The hardwood is mostly maple and the softwood is pine. There are 40 1” boards that make up the width of a lane and are glued together with hide glue. In older lanes the wood becomes unusable as the lane oil that is applied over time and lack of attention to the lanes finish by the proprietor causes the wood to be quite oil soaked.

I used to Bowl A LOT.

          No doubt!

Maybe if the OP shares this info with the guy who bought all the lanes, he may not want to use them for flooring after all.

Even if you offered him double what he paid for one lane, you'd be getting a great deal.

          Regards,
          Tom

I've seen several posts in other forums on this subject.
Apparently at least some lanes are held together by nails,
so if you do get hold of one, check before cutting to size or
              drilling dog holes.

Thanks for the feedback guys... I haven't heard back from the
purchaser yet, and to be honest, will be surprised if I do...
Just makes me sick... 23ft would have made me several tops, could have given a few to my friends and still had enough for my entire shop... [B)][B)][B)]
