The space beyond this opening (the opening and everything to the right) will be walled off and become a home office. I'll install a door where the opening is, and my wife wants that nook to the right to become a recessed bookshelf. We haven't decided whether to make the bookshelf floor to ceiling or just use the space that's there.
I don't want to lose depth in that bookshelf with framing so I am thinking I could span that nook with a sheet of plywood (or 2) and then mud/sand/paint it to match the wall. I think the plywood would be stiff enough in case anyone leaned on the wall from this side. A double layer of plywood would also prevent me from drilling through if I hang a picture on that wall. What do you think?
