    best furniture stripper

    Well ------ I can't turn down a project!

I found a beautiful old Lane cedar chest with boiled up varnish (chemicals?) at a local thrift store.

Joinery work is beautiful. It's solid cedar ---- so that's quite a feat (cedar is soft).

    Questions -----
    - any strong recommendations for varnish stripper?
    - after it's stripped - I was thinking Watco Danish Oil. Any objections?

Hey - why did they drill a hole in the bottom of this cedar chest then patch it back up?

It's cedar on the outside as well as the inside? Could you post a pic of it?
I thought Cedar chests are usually just cedar on the inside, but I'm not sure.

I usually sand down furniture with a sander ( using several different
grades of sand paper) and then only use a liquid stripper
in the hard to reach parts like in the corners.

We used Danish oil on our chessboard and something else, but I can't think of
it right now. Danish oil provides a lovely soft luster. As in all our finishes
we apply it with a rag not a brush.

Please post a pic, I would love to see it.

I don't know what the wood is on the outside...mahagony?
Hopefully someone else can identify it. I think it's going to look
          great refinished.
