    280 bd ft of oak

Picked up 280 bd ft today at .90 cents a foot. It was air-dried for three years. All rough cut 1" thick. Boards ranged from 5", 7", 9" 10" 12" wide and 9.5 ft long. Actually, he charged me for the board length but not the width. Pretty good deal. I think.

That would not be impossible for me to drive and take it off of your hands, or truck!

I have been thinking of gathering some for a couple of projects - if I can get equivalent prices. Recently, I found a sawmill about 60 miles from me. Don't know their prices but you have my interest triggered!

Is it white or red oak? A great deal whichever oak it is. Any of it quarter sawn?

It's red oak and none of it is quarter sawn. I guess the guy wasn't a moron (dang it), just wanted to make room in his shop. I'll be making different stuff to sell at craft shows. Nothing big. I'm into this stinkin' "donut hole" and it's pretty costly. Just going to try to offset some of the cost.

Good price no matter how you look at it, but I'm curious if the 280 number is the board feet or the linear feet? The board foot price would be higher on the narrower boards, since a board foot is 12" x 12", but for the 12" boards the linear and board footage would be the same.

Seems like an unusual way to sell lumber - is that a local practice? Or maybe he was thinking more of how moulding and other processed wood is sold.

The only problem I can see is location. Really that wood should only be used in a Canadian climate. Fortunately for you, I just so happen to know someone who can help. Congrats on a great haul.

Woodturner. He charged me by the linear ft. He said he had it cut to give to someone who had cut up some walnut for him and the guy never came to get it. Lucky me.
Sorry Richard but this is "southern oak". It's far too cold where you are. It would just go into shock in the winter. : )
