Another option is to go to Woodcraft. They sell self stick UHMW rolls in various widths with a peel off back. Not sure how well they would stick to a plywood edge, though.
That was a thought, rabbet the drawer bottom / slide area enough to fit the UHMW, and apply it to the long grain there. That might just do the trick...
Pappy's suggestion would be the one I would go for. It requires the least amount of change to the existing unit. I would also trim about 1/16 inch off the sides of the drawer bottoms and, if needed, use the UHMW tape there also.
