Top is 3/4" baltic birch cut to 52" square, and trimmed with 1" curly maple T&G style. My miters suck, as usual, so I will have to try to shim them. Helps that it will be a dark stain.

Going to plane down the edges tomorrow flush, then go to town sanding then staining. If I do an early and a late shift, I can have the whole thing stained tomorrow, and put a top coat on everything Thursday afternoon and another one on the top on Friday morning.

Still one aspect I haven't settled on, but will have to figure that one out Friday. Oh yeah, have to try and make the drawer somewhere in there as well, plus go into work Thursday morning. Nothing like a deadline...

Staining didn't give me any huge surprises, the gel stain is ridiculously easy to use. May use a gel topcoat, will see what is available.

Think I figured out how I will attach, will prep that aspect tomorrow along with the drawer.

Hit it with a coat of gel poly and it looks really good. I'm hoping it is sturdy, and she likes it. Tomorrow is the reveal.

It was 'delivered' to my wife this morning, who loves it. I wish I had the time or the opportunity to have taken more pics during the process, but even so it's still not quite done yet. If you're interested in seeing a start to finish write-up, I might be able to do that. It's been a long two weeks though, and not just because of this project.

            Gosh, that looks nice!

When I read "3/4" baltic birch ... trimmed with 1" curly maple", I was unconvinced about the combination. One look at the pics cured me of that.

            Nicely done.

Good job! I think you nailed it, looks better than what you could have bought at the store for sure. The curly maple gives a nice contrast from the ply.

I appreciate all the kind words. It's been a stressful couple of weeks trying to get this done in time for the date, and what was going on at work. I spent this afternoon helping the shop recover.
