    grandfather clock plans and movements

I've picked out a set of plans for a grandfather clock I going to make for my wife for her birthday this year. I also selected a movement for the clock. My concern is, how do I know if the movement will fit the clock carcass? Meaning, which one do I buy first? any suggestions?

Quality clock movements generally have the dimensions posted. If they are not it's movement first. If your talking mechanical movement spend the extra $ to get a quality unit. These last for many years with reasonable TLC. My mothers GFC is with my son and it's pushing 60 years and still works fine. A rail station wall clock I built is still keeping good time after 20+ years.

It's a good question. Something like the chicken and the egg thing. Your choices for the clock would to me seem more of an issue than getting a movement to fit it. Off the top of my head I would think it would be more difficult to have the movement and find plans for a clock to fit it.

If it were me I'd buy the movement and if the plans do not match up scale them up to fit.

          Willy,
Please keep us informed on your progress and problems. A grandfather clock is my dream project that I just can't seem to get around to. I have been pondering the same question! At least that is my current excuse to not getting started on it.

Will do Bill. I can tell you it's going to be awhile before I start because of some other projects I'm still working on. I did find a local guy who sells kiln dried oak @ 1.85 bdf and walnut @ 2.10 bdf. I'm probably going to go with the walnut. I'll have to decide on plans and movements so I know how many bdf I'll need. But when I do start, I'll let you know and post some pics as I go along. BTW, I've never done any kind of "fine" furniture before so I'm sure this will be an adventure of a lifetime. lol

JR, I feel the love man, I really do. I'm just not sure what I said to earn it.

Sorry, Willy, I should have loaded up on smily faces and such. I'm incredibly envious that you can get hardwood as such low prices. I love walnut and would kill to get it at that price.

You don't suck. I apologize for saying you do.

Wow! The best I've found is red oak @ 3.49 bf and that is 180 mile drive from here.

Best of luck on the project Willy, but I thought I heard California was banning table saws that are not saw stops, sawdust.... maybe that's why he is unloading the wood so cheap!
Look, I don't want you to get into any trouble, so if you already bought the wood you can bring it down here, I let you unload it here until its safe to go home

No problem JR. I kinda figured it out that it was probably the prices you were addressing. Those prices are not that unusual around here from what I've seen.
And speaking of around here, I've known California's a weird place for a long time and that's one of the reasons I live in Tennessee Chop.
But, I'm going to take a ride over to where this lumber is being sold to have a look around and see what kind of "kiln" this guy has. I'ts a little over an hour away from me but I think it will be time well invested. I'll let you all know what I find out. Wont be for a few days though.

Hey Sweet Willy, does the guy sell to anyone or just friends? I'm near Ooltewah and would like to buy Walnut at $2.10 a bdf.

Here are two links from CL. I still have to check out the less expensive guy but I'd thought I'd post them so you guys can see prices for yourselves. Richard, as you can see, he posted on CL for anyone interested. Good luck.

In that link, the seller states Black Walnut $4.00-$4.50 BF, and Minimum purchase $100. Is the $2.10 BF a different source?
