    William Ng videos

A collection of woodworking videos from the William Ng school. If you're into Greene and Greene furniture check out the one about making ebony plugs. Much quicker than the way I learned how and wished I had known about it earlier.

The video on the GG ebony splines is pretty good as well. I'm planning on making a GG inspired entertainment center in the future and will put his method to use.

They're plastic. Personally I'm not going to spend all that time making a nice piece and then use plastic plugs at the end. Plus the video doesn't show him using any type of adhesive. Just looks like a friction fit.

I'm not sure what you're referring to as plastic. Wasn't Tommy linking to a tool to make the plugs?
PS: Great video link Jussi. Thanks.

If you scroll down a bit you'll see "Artisan Accents, 50 pcs ". They're injection molded copies of GG ebony plugs. The video on the right hand side makes it clear but basically you make a recess (but not a mortise) with the mortising tool and wedge the accents in to replicate a GG ebony plug. It's a great idea but like I said personally if I'm going to take the time to make a GG inspired piece I would want to use real ebony.

Jussi is correct, they are in fact just plastic plugs, I also think that he's correct in the fact that after going to all the work to make a nice piece of furniture it makes more sense to make your own ebony plugs, whether they be out of oak or a similiar hardwood and stained or painted black most folks are not going to know or even care if they are real ebony which can be rather expensive to purchase, a lot of ww's make inexpensive one's as I mentioned out of hardwood and paint or stain them to look like ebony in a lot of case's,That the reasoning I posted the alternative, inexpensive way to duplicate it on the cheap, doubtful anyone will be able to tell the difference and a little glue to secure them is not a big deal. Its a nice video presentation to do it correctly however but I would prolly go the more inexpensive route as I highly doubt anyone would question whether they are real ebony or not, The principal is the same, its a decorative item not really functional as it merely covers the intended mortise with a conventional plug to cover the actual joint.

Actually you can buy a bag ebony pen blanks for around $12 and make dozens of plugs. Not expensive at all unless you're doing huge plugs. Plus GG furniture also incorporates ebony splines which you can't get from that company.

Whatever, stick to your tagline, I was merely providing a cheaper alternative than going to all the trouble of makin the plugs, splines, mortise's,whatever. I provided an alternate and easier method thats all,no real need to get defensive about it or downplay the alternative other than a catfight,MEOW, lol

Wow what is wrong with you Tommy. You act like a 5 year old. I said the accents were great idea but not simply my personal choice and gave options as to where one could buy the pieces cheaply. It's funny how you say I'm being defensive but I'm not the one writes a post full of sarcasm. I've noticed you seem to a very strange reaction if people don't take your advice or give an alternate view point. Either way I'm done.

The trick about closing gaps in miter joints was interesting. Of course, I would never leave such a gap. Ever. Under any circumstances. It was strictly intellectual curiosity that drove me to that video first, before any of the others.

                          Ahem.
