Picture Frame

Wedding gift for a friend. This started out as a Greene and Greene mirror like the one Marc at the Woodwhisperer did. Made a few tweaks and turned it into a picture frame instead. I made alot of mistakes, so I'm not completely happy with it, but fortunately I was able to find a decent fix to most of them. It has a plywood backer which is what you see behind the glass.

The most obvious one is the rails. If you notice the right one is upside down. That's because when I was putting the rabbets for the glass and backing I forgot to flip one of them around. I ended up making to left rails and since I didn't have any extra material and couldn't get any in time I just flipped the right one. After I looked at it though I thought it didn't look too bad that way and thought it actually looked a little better. Or maybe that's just what I tell myself Second I screwed on the size of the opening. I wanted to make it a standard size. It should have been 8 x 10 but something must have gone terribly wrong between sketchup and actual cutting because when I tested the pieces together (before I put the joinery) they looked out of proportion. The rails were way too close together with respect to the stiles. So I chose form over function and pulled them apart. It ended up like 11x12. I found out at the wedding that they're gonna have the photographer just give them the raw data and have it printed elsewhere so hopefully they can specify one that will fit. There's more mistakes but I've rambled on long enough.

I agree that the birds eye does look great. One thing I'm definitely not disappointed in. If anyone is looking bell forest sells them on ebay. I got some nice size pieces for much less than for what I can get locally, even with shipping. If you buy from them and get multiple items, make sure you email them and ask to combine shipping before you pay.

Gotcha, but for one thing, the size difference was negligible so I thought it was artistic. As for the sizing, bigger is better because it allows for ample space for mating, so that is a +! I am sure it will be a big hit :-)

Oh and I just realized I wrote rails instead of stiles. For those that don't know the stiles are the vertical pieces (and the ones I screwed up)
