Bad news, indeed. I have a friend with a lot of walnut trees on his property - he's going to be devastated if all his walnut trees are infected.

I will have to ask a friend of mine if he has anymore. He sold I don't know how many acres of them a couple years back. I believe he still has more (I started dreaming of a sawmill when I heard about it and saw one large tree on a relatives fifth wheel).

Sad and now I'm going to be even more distraught as I work through the few hundred BF of Black Walnut sitting in my lumber stash.

Thankfully I'm very slow, I end up using about 50bf a year.

Sure hope it isn't as bad as the Elm bark beetle. It spread the Dutch Elm disease and wiped out most American Elms. Never did affect the Chinese Elms though. Only remedy was DDT and uncle sam put a stop to that. Of course it did save some birds though.

It's a sad story, but I've got mixed emotions about walnut right now.

It's my favorite WWing wood but our neighbor has one that I park a car
under because it's so close to our property line. The car that we just traded
in looked like a golf ball from all the nuts falling on it. We got "dinged" on the
price for all the repair the dealer would have to do to it to get it ready for
sale. They originally thought it had been through a hailstorm.

I forgot and parked our new car under it the other night. Not even 2K miles
yet and in the morning, I've got a dent in the hood! So now I have to play
the car shuffle to move cars in and out of driveway to avoid the tree or make
room in my dedicated shop and turn it back into a part time garage.

Paul, get one of those portable shelters to park under. My inlaws did that to keep the sap off their new(ish) suv. Works well.

                      Hey Paul,

A simple remedy can be an "act of god". Remember the thing about the "burning bush"

Thanks for the suggestion. I wish I could. We live in the city's "historic
district" (fancy name for HOA for area with old homes) so that's not going to fly.

I'm trying to see the silver lining. With our first house, having to park 2 cars
inside forced me to be neater. My current shop is a mess and most of the tools
in that area are mobile so time to tidy up. I also have 175 bf of walnut leaning
up against the garage door so it's time to get that up on shelves or something.

                        Paul

PS--I do like this neighbor so I'm not ready for heavenly intervention just yet.
If it did fall, it's leaning right towards the shop so I've got to think this through.
I am going to ask for the lumber if this thing comes down while I'm here. The
trunk is straight for at least the first 20 feet. Anyone want to Fedex me some
                        of these borers?
