I generally don't make adjustable shelves as most of my book shelves are side by side and I prefer an even look across wall. But in the few cases where I do, it's usually just to move the shelf up and inch or down an inch. (In other words, just three holes, one-inch apart)

I used to use those L-shaped supports with the pin in the back, but over the last year I've found the pin and ferule (sp?) are much better and nicer to look at. Purchased from Lee-Valley, they are also considerably cheaper than buying the L-shaped supports locally.

I'm making a lot of bookcases for our library and made a template to layout the side pieces, which then get drilled on the press. I use an insert tool to press in the ferules (also from Lee-Valley)
