Best furniture grade plywood for painting

It looks like my first project is going to be a home/office computer desk. It is going to be painted, so I do not want to waste the money on wood that I won't need. I was thinking of using poplar for the solid portion and birch plywood for the ply portions. Does this sound like a good combination? If not, what are your recommendations.

    Thanks.

It's a good combination. Both are easy to work with and not all that expensive. Becareful not to sand through the birch vineer on the plywood and all should be good.

Popular is not that hard of a wood and if you think it might take some abuse look to see if your local BORG or lumberyard has some other hardwood. Here when I can get ash at about the same price I'll take that, it's harder.
