Exterior Newel Post

Does anyone have plans for an exterior newel post? I don't want anything elaborate. Even some ideas on dimensions so I could draw up a plan myself. The stairs are 6 feet wide and 4 stairs going up to my front door.

I am thinking of using a 4 x 4 cedar post and building a type of raised panel design on top of that with a bit of molding detail around the top. Any suggestions?

Not sure if they're too rough for what you have in mind, but I've seen pressure treated newel posts designed for decks at the big box stores.

Personally, I think a 4x4 post that isn't clad in 1x material will look wimpy for
the scale you are talking about. These steps are less than 4' wide. I think 4x4
wrapped by 1x was the right way to go. It ended up being nearly 6x6.
