    Repairing router incident

How would you repair this router mishap, and what would you use? Should it be repair before or after stain, or maybe I should just leave it the way it is?

I would chisel out for a repair insert and glue in a well fitted piece of solid wood (looks like maple). All cut lines should be with the grain. Glue line should taper towards the sharp edge like a scarf joint would look. The insert selected should be very similar in color and grain. I would do this to the bare wood, before any finishing.

What sort of finish were you intending on doing?

I'd probably try filling it, then see how the finish turns out. The couple times I've tried patching something like that it ended up being a butchered mess. That was before I knew what a really sharp chisel could do too.

Cabinetman, yep it's maple. The insert looks like a good idea.

Pelligrini, the finish will be cherry brown aniline dye with WB lacguer topcoat.
