    Whats this wood?

I picked up a nice stash of wood this week and this board was in the mix. I am not totally sure what it is but my best guess is Wenge!

Agree or other opinions. I have never bought Wenge before but as I got the stash for approx $2/ bd/ft I am pretty pleased.

If it eats saw blades for lunch, Wenge. Another possibility is Thinwin.

Looks to be Wenge to me. Fun stuff, splintery and hard on tools.

I've seen some Bocote that looks like that, but I think it's more likely that it's Wenge.

I have some Bocote and compared it to that and this is a lot darker and blacker so it looks like Wenge it is

Now to think about what to make with it, the board is 4/4 3' x 6". When one only has this much of something more exotic its the usual quandry of do I use the whole thing or use it for accents on other projects?

It would make a nice jewelry box, or something like that. However, when making an ehtire piece out of a single wood, the orientation of the grain between the various cutouts can be problematic with any wood having such a pronounced figure. I'd recommend it as a contrasting accent to a complementary lighter wood having uniform lighter color.

Any scraps would also make outstanding pen blanks, particularly if they were cut on a bias.

I would use it for a contrasting detail. If you plan carefully, and can resaw, might also work out for inlays.
