    Chess / Checker Box

Getting ready for Santa's visit to No. 2 grandson. I made a set of collection/display boxes for his older brother's rock collection a couple of years ago. Now that the No. 2 grandson is 12 and somewhat interested in chess, I thought a chess/checker box would be a good project for me and a nice Christmas present for him. The box is about 10" square and about 4-1/2" high; the squares on the board are just under 1" square. The game pieces are 5/8" square; haven't decided on chess pieces yet.

All of the dividers in the box are removable, leaving a simple square box. I am planning to apply a finish of two coats (at least) of wipe-on poly over Minwax Sanding Sealer, but am open to other suggestions.

    Regards, Steve

That's a nice looking work . I'm not sure about the sanding sealer as I've never used it on walnut but I think some kind of oil( BLO, Tung.....) should really pop the walnut and show it off. Then follow with the poly and even buff it up with a touch of paste wax. Just my two cents worth.

Nice looking box and board! I have used 1# to 1 1/2# cut laquer to seal dark woods and it accentuates the grain.
