I'd be curious where you found the thicker stuff and if they have more.
Hardwood Specialties in Lexington. They've got a warehouse full. Open to "guys off the street" every Saturday from 9:00 till noon. Hope to be there tomorrow morning at 11:00ish.

Those prices are outragous for N. C., Crockett. And especially with Wall Lumber in striking distance. For that matter.. it would be much cheaper just to let Wall ship it to you as he ships all over the country. I would probably be forced out of WW with those prices.. or I suppose I could just build single board coat racks with hooks.

I am somewhat shocked....
Except the Wall Lumber price list on their web site shows a higher price than what Dave quoted. Wall lumber is listing $2.00 for 4/4 1C red oak.
The places in PA are showing prices closer to $3.00 for the 4/4 FAS

Whoa.. thanks for the correction, Jim. I haven't looked at Steve's prices in quite a while and everything seems to be in line with most of the hardwwods but... not the 1 C common on red oak. Steve was a muscle car customer of mine at one time and I have been up on several occsions years ago. A class act for sure.
But.. I wouldn't be in the least interested in red oak prices as I can get it much cheaper here one state away. I had around 600 bd. ft. of storm downed and air dried I used for a 5 piece bedroom suit and haven't purchased any for years now. I have also gotten into A & C and prefer the QSWO for that which I am paying around $.30 less for per bd. ft. than Daves source there in NC for red oak. And that source does not clarify that the red oak is FAS from what I just saw on when I brought the site back up.
So... bottom line for me is I am glad I am where I am in this scenario as I just couldn't afford or would pay that much for red oak when it is as common as poplar or pine around here. I do feel sorry for any that are subjected to those prices and I wonder why. I am in Georgia, one state from NC and I cannot see the large variance in price caused by transportion.. etc.?
I suppose something is worth what someone is willing to pay...

Unless I am reading it wrong, The Hardwood Store is listing $2.85 for 4/4 red oak. Other woods vary with Wall being generally a bit cheaper, but on Cherry he really wins - $4.90 vs $5.75 for 4/4 and $5.75 vs $7.55 for 8/4. Pine is something else I would buy from Wall over Hardwood Store. Not sure how shipping would work out, though. Either way, the prices should be cheaper in NC, especially near Mebane, a serious furniture fixture of NC.
Out here it depends a lot on where you buy. There are places in the SF Bay Area (Southern Lumber) that are really expensive and there are others that apparently have very reasonable prices. However eastern species are not inexpensive in California lumberyards, no matter how you slice it.
I try to stick with CL for rough lumber because I've gotten really good deals that way.
