Ideas for a monitor base/stand/riser?

Looking for ideas for a simple base for an LCD monitor (17"). My laptop needs to go under it (with the docking station).

a) the wires/cables to hide behind or under or somewhere
b) maybe I could increase the depth so it'd hold / hide the keyboard when not in use.

anything you have seen elsewhere, even if not in wood, so I could get inspiration?

I have been over-engineering something to hold 3 19" monitors, 2 power strips, and a laptop in it's doc, all to stand off of a desk from a single 1/2" dia. black iron pipe, using standard length nipples and elbows. all for about $50... but then again I have all of the flanges I would need for this project...
