    3/8" mdf-core ply use

    Hi all,
I am going to use a lacewood ply with 3/8" MDF core for the top of a low cabinet. I plan on sitting the ply in rabbets cut in a hardwood frame. The piece of ply will be 48"x12". Should I laminate the ply onto a substrate or is it good enough as is? If so, what do you suggest I use as the substrate?

Also, how wide should I make the rabbets?

    Thanks for the help.

You didn't say, but I am guessing that the total thickness is 1/2". At 12" wide that should be sufficient unless you plan to place some heavy objects on it. 3/8" to 1/2" should be wide enough for the rabbets.

If the top will be supported on all four edges with a rabbet, it could be as narrow as 1/4". For whatever thickness the frame is, you may have enough room in the middle for a supporting frame member.

          All-

Thank you for the advice. I will add a few frame members for extra support.
